PleaseAn architectural tour of northern Italian cities. 30/03/2016 2016 was a busy year with new ideas and coming in from around the globe. This month during an Italian trip I visited Milan, Verona and Venice where I was scoping out some inspiration from the local Architecture, namely that of Carlo Scarpa, Luigi Moretti, Archeo Associati and Grafton Architects of Dublin. Over the one week trip I was able to gain an insight into the unique personality of the area and the characters of these impressive architects by speaking to the inhabitants and curators and by documenting the intriguing forms of these buildings and how they dealt with their respective contexts. Please read more below. Alteration and Urban Intensities
The trip focused on alteration, detail and urban intensity. We began in Bergamo where we encountered the existing city and its composite conglomeration. Here we inspected the existing Urban condition noting details of construction, assemblies, adjustments and relations. The topography was strong and bears on the section of the city and its buildings. We saw the existing city as well as some contemporary works by Archea Associati. In Milan we focused on urban re-construction and alteration. Milan is home to such important architectural publications as Domus and Casabella, vehicles for the proclamation of new futures for the city by such great architects as Gio Ponti, Aldo Rossi, Asnago Vender, Muzio, Pagano, Caccia Dominioni, Portaluppi, all of whom are great architects knitting new work into the intensity of old Milan. Verona allowed us to spend a significant time with Carlo Scarpa and his work at Castelveccio. A radical transformation of an existing series of structures in the centre of Verona. We had time to see other parts of this beautiful city which contains the world famous Roman Arena, used for the Verona Opera festival.
